and that the treatment most parents give their child for fever may in fact be making your child's illness worse, last longer, and be harming their long term health.

The Problem: 'Fever Phobia'

'Fever Phobia' = The irrational and exaggerated fear of fever

Myth: The popular misconception is that fevers are bad, especially for babies and children.

Fact: The truth is that fevers are a fundamental part of our immune system,
and are one of the most important protective mechanisms we have.

Unfortunately however, 'fever phobia' exists in all sectors of society, including among medical professionals,  and studies have shown that in recent decades, this fear has only gotten worse.

As a result, fever is one of the most common ailments seen by health care providers, accounting for about 1/3 of all presenting conditions in children, and children's fever medicines such as Calpol, Tylenol and Children's Neurophen and Ibuprofen, have become some of the most popular over the counter medicines.

Unfortunately however, overdosing from such over the counter medicines is the single most common form of accidental poisonings, which is very worrying, especially when you consider that it only takes a doubling of the recommended dose for such medicines to become toxic, and may result in liver failure or even death.

Having said all this, there are a number of rare but real 'red flag' situations where a sick child, with or without a fever, could be in real danger and need urgent medical attention.  These situations might be rare, but it is important that as a parent or a carer, you are aware of them and able to spot warning signs as early as possible.

The Solution: Education

Standard medical guidelines state that fever medicines (anti-pyretics) should not be used to try to reduce a temperature, as this has been found to prolong the duration of the illness, worsen the illness, and lead to an increased risk of allergies, asthma, eczema and autism.

Despite these facts, however, popular myths about fever continue, and the results are only harming our children, and their long term health.

The costs of these health burdens, both personally within our own families, and nationally for our health services, is immeasurable, but must be in the millions, if not billions, especially when we think about the amount of time we may need to talk off from paid work to look after our sick children.

All of this has lead one Doctor to state:

"I think that paracetamol should be taken off the market...
If this was done to coincide with a national campaign explaining the benefits of fever then it would have a major educational effect on the general public.  Consequently, this would reduce the number of consultations in general practice considerably and would probably enhance the health of the nation".

Well, it's not for me to take paracetamol, or any other fever medication, off the market, but I can help educate you on If, When and How to Treat Childhood Fevers.

Studies show that educating parents, grandparents and other carers about fevers, "increases their satisfaction, comfort, and confidence", and can lead to a "30% to 35% decrease in visits (to Doctors) for fever and a 20% to 25% decrease in all visits for acute problems".

More importantly, basic education about childhood fevers can help your child to feel better, recover quicker, and improve their long term health.

Given that all the information contained in this course is available for free on internet, why should you bother to pay me for it?  Well, it's a question of time.

Childhood fevers have been a special interest for me, both personally and professionally for many years.  My son is now 7 (he's had many fevers over years), before that I trained to be a natural healthcare provider for 5 years, and I've been in practice for 6 years.  In that time, I've helped hundreds of families to better understand how to improve their health, including supporting their children with fevers.  

In the past year especially, since I had the idea to make this course, I've been researching childhood fevers and fever medication in much more depth in the medical literature, pulled out the most relevant information, translated it from the medical jargon and figured out how to present it all to you in a way that is easily accessible and understandable.
